How a Silent Disco Works

A silent disco is a dance party where the music goes to wireless headphones instead of speakers. Everyone on the floor hears the music. Everyone off the floor hears people laughing and shuffling. It looks strange for about thirty seconds and then it’s the most fun anyone has had at a party in years.

The three pieces of equipment

Transmitters. Small boxes that take audio from a DJ mixer, laptop, or phone and broadcast it over a short-range radio signal. One transmitter per channel.

Headphones. Wireless over-ear headphones with a channel switch, a volume knob, and LEDs that glow a different color per channel. Ours run three channels and last a full night on a charge.

An audio source. A DJ, a band, or a phone with a playlist. Anything with a headphone jack or line out.

Why channels matter

Three channels is the reason silent discos work for mixed crowds. At a wedding, one channel plays the couple’s playlist, one plays throwbacks for the parents, and one plays country or hip hop for whoever asked. Guests switch with a button on the ear cup. You can see who is listening to what by the color of their headphones, which turns into its own game.

What it feels like

Volume is personal. Someone who wants it loud turns it up. Someone who wants to talk pulls one ear cup off. Tables next to the dance floor can hold a normal conversation. Venues with noise curfews stop caring, because there is nothing to measure.

What you need to run one

  1. Enough headphones for everyone on the floor at once. Here’s how to count.
  2. Something playing music into each channel.
  3. A table or a person to hand headphones out and collect them.
  4. Power for the transmitters.

That’s it. We deliver, set up, and pick up, so most hosts only need to handle step two, and we can handle that too with a DJ package.

Where it works best

  • Outdoor and beach venues with sound ordinances
  • Hotel ballrooms next to other events
  • Neighborhoods where a speaker would draw a police visit
  • Any room where half the guests want to dance and half want to talk
